Day 26: Less time in the shower
By: Megan N. – {Team Green}
Sometimes after a long restless night or a stressful day at work, it’s nice to just go and stand under the water; letting the hot steaming water pour over your head. The thing is, the most relaxing showers are most of the time, the ones that waste the most water. I myself enjoy taking long showers, and I constantly deal with my dad yelling, “MEGAN THAT’S LONG ENOUGH. GET OUT OF THE SHOWER, YOU’RE WASTING WATER.” Do your parents ever say that? It’s annoying to hear that, but he’s right. I would always think that he would say that because I was wasting money, and I was, but I also realize now that I was wasting a lot of water. How long do you take your showers?
You use about 2.5 gallons a minute in the shower. Let’s take a moment to think about that. If your average shower is 7 minutes, than the amount of water you could be using is around 17.5 gallons. By cutting back on your showers, you can be saving around 4500 gallons a year. The thing is, water is a scarce resource and our over use and waste of it not only effects other people but also other species. Hot water requires energy—generally fossil-fuel based—to be heated and maintained. Taking a shower every day can affect the health of ecosystems, water supplies for our communities and farms, and climate change.
