Day 39 Wrapping Up…
Team Brown Reflection
Day 39: Thank you
Day:38 Thank You From Team Green
By Lily, Jarrett, Kelli, and Megan
All of Team Green would like to thank all of you for commenting on our blogs. We think it is very important to keep caring for the environment even after this 40 day challenge is done. Jarrett and Megan informed you about taking shorter showers. By taking shorter showers, its saves tons of water each day. Kelli wrote about eating less fast food, since it takes a lot of energy to make one burger. Lily talked about preserving resources by using stainless steel bottles. This can help reduce the size of landfills on Earth. Try out our suggestions, because every little change makes a big difference in the environment. Thank you again for viewing our blogs and offering your thoughts. Go green with the Green Team!
From your friends, Kelli, Lily, Jarrett, and Megan

Day 37: Team Black
Throughout these past 40 days we have gathered various information on how to be much more “green”. These are the summary of things we have learned.
Taking a shower costs 10 cents per minute
Washing your hair daily will dry out your scalp
260 gallons a day
If world cuts out showering every other day then we could save you up to 45 gallons of water a day
Plastic is a serious earth problem because of humans contributing plastic to huge landfills, and since plastic does not degrade as well as other materials, it fills our landfills quite quickly.
And that:
Keeping your lights turned on for a short amount of time is better than flicking them on and off rapidly, whenever entering or leaving a room just for a small amount of time.
DAY 36: SAVING THE EARTH IS EASY!!!!~TEAM RED

Day 36: Reflection from Team Pink
We learned that we can help save the earth through recycling more often. It’s the simple things that we can do to make a difference. Doing so is essential in the present an
d for future generations. We also learned that we should try to come up with other ways to help the earth from changing lightbulbs to visiting websites that can save energy to help the earth, everyone can make a difference. Thanks for looking at our posts. We hope you will take our ideas and go use them.

Day 19: Saving Paper. Preston Scheidt
Did you know that one million tons of paper is used every day? Paper comes out
as the highest percentage of garbage in landfills. Using this much paper is bad for the environment and is destroying the forest. So here are some tips for you to save paper. When you print something, ask yourself if you really need to. If you really do need to print something, use both sides of the paper. Do not print something out if your only printing one line. In the office, try to make your workplace as paperless as possible. Do not throw away paper, recycle it.

Day 32: Saving Energy With Electronics

By Ashley – Team Red
Have you wondered how you can save energy while you are using a laptop? You can $ave energy by using Blackle.com instead of using Google. When your screen is white, it wastes more energy than a dark screen. Blue screens also help, but black screens save more energy. When you’re in Microsoft Word, change the background color to black while you’re typing. Then, when it’s time to print it out, change the background back to white. I always keep a Blackle tab open, since I’m usually searching something, and if I leave the computer it’s not wasting as much energy. You can also turn down your computer screen. With laptops, the battery will last longer, which is good for traveling when at the airport or at a café or coffee shop. This works with other electronics like the GameBoy, NintendoDS, etc. They will last longer so you can use them longer
Also, if you unplug the USB port it can save a little energy. Most electricity is wasted when it is plugged into the power outlet, but not in use. For example, a toaster.
Day 32: Staying Cool Without Wasting Energy
By Christine: Team yellow
When the cold months are over, many people will undoubtedly turn their thermostats down to cool down. Unfortunately, the air conditioner can add an extra 10% to the amount of energy used in a house, and 80% of energy is used by homes! To help keep these numbers down, there are many simple and easy things anybody can do.
The first step is turning up the thermostat just two degrees. If a house is usually 72°Fahrenheit, turn up the temperature to 74°. This will lower the amount of energy being used. If this seems too warm, there are other things that can help this problem. Since dark clothing absorbs more heat than lighter colored clothing, it is a good idea to wear white or pastels. If you close your blinds on windows that let in a lot of sunlight, the difference is amazing! It can change a sweltering room into a very comfortable one. The final step is to drink a lot of cool water. Ice cold water can make our body do more work and actually get warmer. Try drinking cool water without ice cubes to stay hydrated.

Day 31: Reusable Bottles
By Erin, Team Purple.
It takes plastic bottles a very long time to decompose, if not at all. My family and I now use reusable bottles, that way we do not have to buy the plastic bottles which can get very expensive. Reusable water bottles can be used over and over and over again, plus they don’t hurt the earth. Most of the nonreusable bottles people use go into landfills, they are not put into recycling bins so they can be melted down and used again. Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles in one hour. 80 percent of what Americans own are recyclable. Yet we only recycle 28 percent of that. The people in America have bought 50 million water bottles and 38 million of those empty bottles were thrown into the land fill not put in the proper recycling bin.
Plastic bottles not only do not decompose, but the bottles use 1.5 million barrels of oil to make the bottles only for America. That is enough oil to fuel 100,000 cars for a year. When we get this fuel we have to drill in the ocean, and ocean spills can occur killing thousands of sea creatures and polluting hundreds of miles of ocean water. Using a reusable water bottle will cause less people to buy plastic bottle, thus oil will be drilled less. Buy reusable water bottles and save the earth one step at a time.
This video shows a pretty good idea of what it looks like when all these water bottles are thrown away in the landfills.

Day 30 – Saving the Earth One Water Bottle at a Time
By: Katharine, Team Brown
When you use disposable water bottles once you are wasting natural resources. Manufacturing disposable plastic water bottles uses more water than is actually in the in the water bottle. When you use disposable water bottles everyday for when you at the gym, in the car, at lunch, and during work you are actually spending more money than you would if you bought one reusable water bottle and fill it up everyday at home for when you are out and about. When you use a reusable water bottle you are reducing toxic gases and the greenhouse gasses that result in manufacturing non-reusable plastic water bottles. If you do use non-reusable water bottles, most end up in the land fill. About 10 billion water bottles end up as garbage in the land fill. There are chemicals that leach from the plastics have been proven to cause birth defects, low sperm counts, and an increase in testicular cancer. If you use your own reusable water bottle you will save money, water, and keep people healthy.
Day 30- Wear a Sweater!
By Zosia: Team Green
As we enter the winter months, many turned to their house’s heaters to keep them warm at home. The Department of Energy estimates that about 50% to 70% of the average American’s energy bills is used on heating the house. Why would anyone want to use that much money on heating, especially because of the bad economy? There is another, simpler way to keep yourself and your family warm, WITHOUT paying a lot of money. Wear a sweater!
Day 29: Oxygenating Shower Heads
by Caroline: Team Black
Everyone takes showers to keep clean and smell good, but there is a simple, easy way to go green while still enjoying your showers. Just by changing your shower heads to ones that oxygenate, you can become very energy efficient.
These shower heads can:
- increase water pressure
- add oxygen to water
- save money
- save energy
- save water
People in the United States use an average of three billion gallons of water per-day when taking a shower. Half of that water used is unnecessary. If you change to an oxygenating shower head you will start taking steps toward saving the wasted water and the rest of our earth.

Day 29: Save water
By Julia – Team Blue
I am hear to tell you about some ways you can save water.!!!
You can take shorter showers! When you are brushing do not leave the water on.
@ Don’t waste water because…..
* It’s bad to waste it.
*Put a waterproof clock in the shower, so I can monitor my time.
*Put a timer in the bathroom
*Turn off the hot water after the designated time is up.
Day 28: Breathe Easier with Plants
By AnnaP – TeamYellow
Indoor allergies aren’t fun, but there’s no need to suffer any longer. Plants naturally filter air, so by putting a few in a room, mold, dust, and airborne allergens will be reduced. They also have a pleasant appearance.
Most air fresheners release chemicals and fragrances that can aggravate allergies; plants don’t. So, rather than spending money and using a spray or plug-in air freshener, get a plant and make the room look nice while reducing airborne allergens.
